Does the draw matter in horse racing?
Sometimes enormously. As a standalone way of beating the market, it died under test.
We killed the idea, and we kept the record of killing it.
Both things are true
Badly drawn horses genuinely do underperform in the right conditions. On certain tracks, at certain distances, on certain ground, a stall number is worth lengths. Anyone who has watched a 5f sprint at a sharp track knows this and is not imagining it.
So we tested whether that could be turned into an edge. We took the draw on its own, as a way of beating the market, and measured it on held-out races the method had never seen.
It returned a clean null.
Why a real effect can still be worthless
Because everyone else can see it too.
Draw bias is one of the most discussed features in British racing. It is in the form guides, the previews and the pundits' notes. By the time a price is settled, a strong draw effect is usually in it. The effect is real and the opportunity is gone, and those are different claims.
This is the single most common way a good racing idea fails. Not because it was wrong, but because it was already priced.
What survived
Something narrower and more useful. The draw still matters to us, but only in combination with pace, running position and the shape of the course.
A wide draw in a race with no early pace is a different problem to the same draw in a strongly run contest. A horse that needs to lead, drawn where it cannot, is being asked a question the form book will not show you. That interaction is genuinely hard to price, which is exactly why it is worth working on.

Most people in racing show you the ideas that survived. We keep the ones that died, in public, because it is the only honest way to ask anyone to trust the ones that lived.
